Elbows smashing while drawing the Popfest Rodeo, bodies pushing, sweat and beer mixing into a slippery alchemy soup on the floor that resurrects those who fall. Hardcore magick potion. Someone lost his glasses. The stage is no barrier anymore, band and crowd mixing, cables spanning telegraph lines with riffs morsecoding directly into the brain while trying to catch a last breath. On the third day of Popfest 2026, Shake Stew took over the Seebühne stage with jazz and tunes that made me tipsy in their flow of notes and nuances, and so also the crowd, whose collection of smiles and grins grew bigger and bigger the longer the band was rolling. I sat, hopped, and drew the view of the front row - its the people bathing in jazz sound, the crowd shaking, the rhythm as pencil strokes, cigarette ash fiddling over saxophonics, aperol splashes on the bass, the music moving tree branches at Karlsplatz into a crescendo, or whatever it is called. Extastic. Fantasimorph. Brillomenious. Amazinlistic. Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.

Popfest 2026 - 3 Days, 6 Live Drawings: Day 2, Alles Exhausted took over the sound and the room was either giving all energy or it happened the other way round. In the epicenter of shaking shoes and heads moving, the pencils did their dance along independently. Front row, stage thrill and some exhaustion only because day 2 of Popfest was setting in. It is a rush, it rolls, it rocks. Home is where you head bangs. Slowly at least.

On the second day of Popfest 2026, Vereter & Die Woarmen Semmeln playing their slot in Prechtl-Saal, the random pencil selection got the blues, and all Popfest people doing the waltz and wiggle. It is a new perspective, these are stories worth telling and listening to. Vereter & Die Woarmen Semmeln shine a spotlight on what we Viennese often neglect to look at. Pete Prison IV portrays those real-life experiences if you are not Gänsehäufl Red/White/Red. Blue lights flashing because you don't look Opernball, or attempts to break your rock foundation because it is allochthonous. Things that happen to so many people in cities of home. Well played. Spilif was touching my buried hiphop soul from the good ol' rap days, with beats marching and flows to pay tolls for a track graze. With my hand moving in the grooves played by the band, I pressed mentally play for some hope the tape deck has no end. I was a 4/4 machine - back on the dream that words matter, despite all lines crossing my mind came out clean but still shattered. Time time - with a tick of the moment, sounds sounds built a home and became dormant. More more, one more round for the Popfest trendsetter, I am back on the hiphop baby, at least for one letter.

And that's how it started - Thursday evening on Karlsplatz, Vienna, strolling into @popfestwien. The yellow duck was floating smilingly in the pond, the people gathering to start an auditory journey to whatever styles and places their eardrums enjoy being stimulated by. Beer cans in hand, the night setting in. I began the yearly series with Tamara Flores on stage, and me having a drink and my hand drawing the crowd.

Whenever the Cosmic Dead from Scotland come to town, it liquifies earth like the Ship Which Sails Over Land and Sea and as an Eternal Champion's fever dream. Jumping like humpbacks in their bow, crawling alongside like burying beetles, our molecules are shattered as soon as the wall of sound does its tsunamiesque arrival. We are stardust. Slowly dissolving in the darkness, only lit by dim, dying suns and the stroboscopic cascades of stage light's supernovae. We are cosmic. The trance captivates everyone, a whole room of moving bodies, bending, bowing, breaking apart. Don't forget to breathe. Don't stop. Don't stop! Bones are protesting, and eardrums are humming, but don't stop. That's the sound of eternity. That's what vibrates deep down in the fibers of the cosmos between nebulas and stars. This is the dark matter. The search is over, the results are in. We are dead.

Three - Two - Artemis II started up into the sky some days ago, and mankind is returning to the Moon. In Metalab Vienna, people who care deeply for space, the universe, and have their brains extending into the cosmos with mental wires and beams, gathered to watch the live stream of the rocket launch along with some drinks and snacks. One - my drawing pencil moves frenetically with the growing excitement, and everyone was holding their bottles as if they were lifelines and talismans to appraise the fiery ghosts of the exhaust flames - And Lift Off! To the Moon!

And there it was again - a full two days drag into some different state of mind, down the stairs two levels and a hall full of sound, psych, and paradise. And all shadows became snakes, faces melted into a common mass of like-mindedness, and I swam through the blissful dance-induced sweat and tears of joy. Jolly good, roger roger. Sail ho, and until next year, when we are again summoned.

This one started already 2025 with drawing a moment in the old and wonderful Cafe Anno, a night bar in Vienna. People sitting, talking and recharging on their drinking needs under gloomy lights, while time flies through the ghost hour. Two of them standing in the center of the room, getting closer to each other slowly, sip by sip. I carried the rolled cardboard with me into the new year, through Silvester, and then back to the place, painting the new year in aquarell colors, but with beer instead of water. Meanwhile a party glitter box exploded in my art bag, and a friendly girl gave me some special makeup pen to draw in. Its all effect. We are there.
